The Beery House – William Kesling Architect
Designed by architect William Kesling for 1930s movie star Wallace Beery, this home is considered the jewel of Streamline Moderne. The striking horizontal ~~~speed lines~~~ and wing-like Pergola gates are accented by an eco-friendly garden of mature succulents. A tiled fountain draws visitors to the hidden front door, which opens to a dramatic living/dining room with ten-foot ceilings. Clearstory and casement windows lend an indoor/outdoor feel, framing a view of the expansive and beautifully landscaped backyard featuring a koi pond, original stone barbecue, and meandering paths leading to a bubbling rock fountain. Inside, hardwood floors and a recently restored Roman Brick fireplace in the living room lend warmth uncommon in such a modern home. The bathrooms have been lovingly restored to their 1930s glamour, while a full-house-and-garden sound system, modern roofing material and tankless water heater update the home to present- day standards. Truly, an architectural treasure.
